Most of what makes a first flight stressful is not knowing the sequence. Here is the whole sequence, plainly. Read it and you may not need anyone — that is fine, and it is the honest reason this page exists.
Before you leave home
Carry the ID you booked with — the name on it must match the ticket exactly. Reach the terminal two hours before a domestic flight and three before an international one. Check which terminal: large airports have several and they can be a twenty-minute drive apart.
At the terminal door
A security officer checks your ticket and ID before you go in. Have both in your hand, not in a bag. Inside, find your airline's check-in counters on the departure boards.
Check-in and baggage
You hand over the bags you do not want with you and keep one cabin bag. You get a boarding pass with a gate number and a boarding time. The gate number can change — the boards are the truth, not the printout.
Security
Laptops and liquids come out of the bag. Belts, watches and coins go in the tray. This is the queue that makes people anxious and it is also the one that moves fastest.
The gate
Be at the gate by the boarding time on the pass, not by the departure time. Boarding closes well before the aircraft moves, and a closed gate does not reopen.

- At the counters and the desks, yes. At immigration you answer for yourself, as everyone must — we get you to the right channel and stand with you.
- What if I miss the gate?
- Being walked to the gate is precisely what stops that. If you are running late, the assistant knows the terminal and the shortest route through it.
